Television Production Major

Television is both a distribution channel and a production source, making the television industry a dynamic space. Students will explore what opportunities are available in the diverse and changing television industry through both the theoretical and practical understanding of the industry. Students will explore distribution channels, the role of social media, streaming product and the various alternative media spaces that exist. From a production perspective, students undertaking this major will explore the myriad of roles that exist in the industry including: single camera, multi camera as well as location or studio based productions. Students will analyse various genres, explore industry trends and amass a body of work that will lead to employability within the exciting television industry.

TVR 2001 Advanced Television Studio Production

Working in a television studio requires the mastery of key concepts and awareness of the production and technical skills required to work in the industry. This course builds upon  foundational skills developed in TVR 1001, allowing students to  take on more senior roles. Students will be working on a television production that will be seen on a network television channel.  Working on a program means that you build skills, confidence and awareness of audience, scripting, producing, directing and a range of other roles.

This course engages students with the language and terminology used in the industry. It will build further competencies utilised in other courses in the degree.  Students will continue to build skills in a single camera, location environment, developed sophisticated production elements and be made aware of the value of media management. You will be producing a program under industry standards and practice.  Other skills will be developed including critical thinking, effective communication skills and team work, vital for employment in the industry.

TVR 2003 Introduction to AVID Video and Audio Editing

Avid Media Composer as industry standard software heavily present in motion picture, major productions, documentaries, television programs and commercial production. This course introduces students to industry standard software, and Avid Pro-tools. During the course the student will be introduced to the video editing software Media Composer and to understand the use of pro-tools in a video environment.

Students will be taught the importance of effective media management and be shown the Avid infrastructure that links the media centre and reflects standard media production house workflow.

During this introductory course students should gain the key skills in the effective use of media composer by producing a range of finished products. This will include audio sound design, and compliments TVR1003.  Having the knowledge of effectively editing with media composer will ensure that the student is well placed to work in a range of production facilities globally.

TVR 2004 Television Outside Broadcast

Outside broadcast production hires a significant number of people week by week for all kinds of events. The skills employed in this type of television or radio production are considerable.  Directing, Producing, audio, camera and a range of technical and production skills required in this environment.  The course will feature guest presenters from the industry and a range of practical local activities to build skills and knowledge.

TVR 2004 introduces the student to the outside broadcast production space. The student will be exposed to the variety of outside broadcast approaches. This includes the single camera live stream environment, Live radio crosses and full radio outside broadcasts and the comprehensive High Definition outside broadcast truck for television and radio. These are the outside broadcast units used for major sporting events, concerts and events.

TVR 2006 Advanced AVID Audio & Video Editing

Avid Media Composer as industry standard software heavily present in motion picture, major productions, documentaries, television programs and commercial production. Students undertaking this course are building on the skills established in the introductory course, TVR 2003. In this course students will continue on with their skill development and application by working on more advanced bodies of work.  To support this work students will work on commercial productions, such as advertisements, promotions and corporate video style product.  This will involve the use of Media Composer and Pro-tools.

Media composer and Pro-tools are industry standard software and is used extensively in film, television productions and across a range of audio productions.

TVR 3001 Broadcast Commercial Production

Commercial production embraces retail commercials, online storytelling, brand development through corporate video production and represents a significant sector in broadcast media. As such, an understanding of, and skills in, commercial production are significant for the broadcasting professional. In this course the student will be introduced to the diverse commercial production space within broadcast media.

This will include both radio and television production.

This is a viable space for students to consider for income generation as either a private business or to work for a number of large and small existing production houses.

TVR3006 will bring together many of skills learned and developed over the program.

TVR 3002 News & Magazine Production

News, current affairs and lifestyle products are in high demand within radio and television. Students undertaking this course will be introduced to the production side of this important element of the industry.  Production people work closely with journalists and increasingly journalism students will in fact be using the camera and editing software themselves.

The student should gain insights to the types of software, documents and processes used in news, current affairs and lifestyle programs. The course will support work in television and radio as well as the digital platforms such as social media, websites and other online services.

TVR 3004 Major Broadcast Project

Major Broadcast Project is a capstone course that allows a student to give due emphasis to key skills with a view to increase employability or advancing to post graduate study. This will be achieved by undertaking an individually directed project that will be supported by three to four key goals that will drive the overall semester work.

TVR 3005 Distribution Channels and Social Media

Television and Radio distribution has changed significantly over the past two decades. The traditional broadcast model is still relevant but it has given way to a range of other services.  From Youtube to Facebook live and Instagram, the online space is carrying a significant amount of content.  This does not account for pay television, Video on Demand, streaming services and a range of other products all seeking to get content to the audience and make money in the process.

What of the audience, the consumer? Does this meet the needs of the people? Students undertaking this course will meet leaders in the field and hear of the rationale behind services like ABC iView, Fetch, Foxtel and the like. Know the options, how these can be used effectively becomes important for the contemporary artist in broadcast.
