Radio Production Major

Radio continues to be a resilient and growing part of the mediascape. Radio is now conceived as being part of the broader audio business, including streaming, podcasts and other audio platforms. Students undertaking the radio major will be exploring these various aspects of the industry. The industry offers a range of career opportunities and this major will explore each. Students will analyse and build practical skills in on-air presenting, producing, scriptwriting, commercial production, outside broadcasts, promotions, music and content programming, and radio sales and management. This will allow students to develop content and practically express themselves creatively within the audio industry. The theoretical underpinning will give rise to important questions to be explored within this dynamic and burgeoning industry.

The radio major introduces you to the diverse audio industry, radio is one vital part of the audio business and is still as popular as ever. TVR 2002 Advanced Radio Production

Professionals in the radio industry require advanced levels of skills in broadcasting, building show promotions, writing and producing commercials. This course builds on the skills developed in TVR 1002, Introduction to Radio Production and as an advanced course will continue to reinforce and grow skills and foster knowledge in a range of experiences in line with industry expectations.

The student will apply the skills of the studio interview to the location interview opportunity. This should develop the use available sound, constructing a story and building on the concept of the Theatre of the Mind.

The use of outside broadcasts and live crosses will be new knowledge and skills will be taught through this course leading to the specialist course, TVR 3005.

TVR 2003 Introduction to AVID Video and Audio Editing

Avid Media Composer as industry standard software heavily present in motion picture, major productions, documentaries, television programs and commercial production. This course introduces students to industry standard software, and Avid Pro-tools. During the course the student will be introduced to the video editing software Media Composer and to understand the use of pro-tools in a video environment.

Students will be taught the importance of effective media management and be shown the Avid infrastructure that links the media centre and reflects standard media production house workflow.

During this introductory course students should gain the key skills in the effective use of media composer by producing a range of finished products. This will include audio sound design, and compliments TVR1003.  Having the knowledge of effectively editing with media composer will ensure that the student is well placed to work in a range of production facilities globally.

TVR 2005 Radio Outside Broadcast and Podcasting

Outside broadcasts are presented in a variety of contexts, sport, concerts, major events, community activities and special occasions. An outside broadcast takes the listener to the event and gives them a front row seat.  Students undertaking this course will explore the broader applications of the radio industry. In this course the student will gain knowledge in the outside broadcast aspect of radio.

TVR 2006 Advanced AVID Audio & Video Editing

Avid Media Composer as industry standard software heavily present in motion picture, major productions, documentaries, television programs and commercial production. Students undertaking this course are building on the skills established in the introductory course, TVR 2003. In this course students will continue on with their skill development and application by working on more advanced bodies of work.  To support this work students will work on commercial productions, such as advertisements, promotions and corporate video style product.  This will involve the use of Media Composer and Pro-tools.

Media composer and Pro-tools are industry standard software and is used extensively in film, television productions and across a range of audio productions.

TVR 3001 Broadcast Commercial Production

Commercial production embraces retail commercials, online storytelling, brand development through corporate video production and represents a significant sector in broadcast media. As such, an understanding of, and skills in, commercial production are significant for the broadcasting professional. In this course the student will be introduced to the diverse commercial production space within broadcast media.

This will include both radio and television production.

This is a viable space for students to consider for income generation as either a private business or to work for a number of large and small existing production houses.

TVR3006 will bring together many of skills learned and developed over the program.

TVR 3003 Radio Programming and Promotions

It is important for radio production professionals to have the required knowledge and skills of the business of radio and the associated roles to on air and production within a radio station.  These knowledges and skills help ensure the professional knows how each part comes together to make the whole radio station becomes increasingly important.  It develops a respect and awareness of the roles, it provides the opportunity to explore other employment opportunities.

The on-air talent tend to be the public facing side of the radio station, how their talents and popularity can be harnessed is what the student will explore through station promotional activities. What they put to air, what drives the radio station into the direction it goes is the matter of management and programming.  It is here that we will learn of and appreciate the value of the audience, what ratings will influence and how a radio station understands that it is meeting its targets and objectives.

TVR 3004 Major Broadcast Project

Major Broadcast Project is a capstone course that allows a student to give due emphasis to key skills with a view to increase employability or advancing to post graduate study. This will be achieved by undertaking an individually directed project that will be supported by three to four key goals that will drive the overall semester work.

TVR 3005 Distribution Channels and Social Media

Television and Radio distribution has changed significantly over the past two decades. The traditional broadcast model is still relevant but it has given way to a range of other services.  From Youtube to Facebook live and Instagram, the online space is carrying a significant amount of content.  This does not account for pay television, Video on Demand, streaming services and a range of other products all seeking to get content to the audience and make money in the process.

What of the audience, the consumer? Does this meet the needs of the people? Students undertaking this course will meet leaders in the field and hear of the rationale behind services like ABC iView, Fetch, Foxtel and the like. Know the options, how these can be used effectively becomes important for the contemporary artist in broadcast.
